The model prison (1785) was based on the ideas of the great prison reformer John Howard. As well as a prison, the Bridewell has also served as a former police station and courthouse. The museum explains the history of the Bridewell and also offers a journey through Wymondham's colourful history and covers events such as Robert Kett's rebellion and the Great Fire of 1615. There are permanent exhibitions of daily life in Wymondham covering brushmaking, farming and shopping. Children's activities include visiting the dungeon, listening to stories by the gaoler and policeman or trying the prunishment 'crank' in the prison display. The museum also offers a lovely garden and a friendly welcome in the tearoom.
